AstraZeneca presents at European Respiratory Society

The European Respiratory Society, or ERS, will hold their annual International Congress of 2022 in Barcelona, Spain this September. This is the world’s largest gathering of respiratory professionals. 2022 will be the first that the International Congress will be held in person after meeting virtually for the past two years due to COVID-19. AstraZeneca, who gained international notoriety during the pandemic thanks to their breakthroughs in vaccinations against COVID-19, will be among those presenting.

“We built a model to predict the risk of asthma patients who take oral corticosteroids,” said Brooklyn Stanley, the lead author and presenter of AstraZeneca’s Oral corticosteroid risk predictor for diabetes in asthma patients. “We specifically used a pre-COVID timeline to prevent COVID from biasing our results.” While this was Stanley’s first time presenting at such an event, she was encouraged by the dedication of like-minded individuals working towards better health for all.

“We’re going to make a risk predictor app online next, using this data we got from our research,” added Stanley. “Diabetes was just one of the diseases we looked at. If we can show the risks of prescribing steroids, we can decrease overall steroid usage and encourage alternative treatments.”

The European Respiratory Society was founded in 1990 and has grown to over 35,000 members across more than 160 countries. Their headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland. Their mission statement is to “prioritizes science, education and advocacy in order to promote lung health, alleviate suffering from disease and drive standards for respiratory medicine globally.” (2022)

The ERS International Congress will meet from 3-7 September 2022 in Barcelona, Spain. This will take place in the FIRA Barcelona Gran Via congress centre, in Hall 8. The annual event will display and discuss over 1,000 presentations, 1,500 posters, and 4,000 abstracts.
